Death to America: Falling from the Foundations of Faith and Forfeiting our Freedom
“There is always a moment in the story of great powers when their own citizens become their own worst enemies – not so much in the form of homegrown terrorism as in the form of the citizenry thinking and living at odds with what it takes for the nation to thrive.” – Os Guinness, A Free People’s Suicide
“America is not a Christian nation.” – Barack Hussein Obama
To assert that America is not a Christian nation is to forsake the very structural foundation essential for our nation to exist in her founded form; the form which has led to America being the bastion of individual liberty, societal progress, and wealth creation, not to mention global standard in the fight against tyranny and evil and wide-margin leader in world evangelism (the stated goal of the Mayflower Compact).
Anticipating the usual talking points from the Secular Left (along with now, unfortunately, far too many of our countrymen who name the Name of Christ as Lord, having been swindled by the pop-culture-politico-mainstream media into adopting the anti-Christian, anti-American narrative of the Left for the sake of “relevance”), it must be added that according to the biblical worldview, mankind is a fallen race and therefore, no collection of human beings coalesced in any form (church, nation, etc.) will be perfect until God makes all things right at the final bell. Previous generations of biblically literate Americans have understood this and the qualifier of “A Christian nation doesn’t mean a perfect nation” wasn’t necessary. America has faltered and deviated from her founding Judeo-Christian principles in many ways since her miraculous national birth and subsequent burst onto the scene of world nations and has suffered immense sin-related consequences as a result. However, what we’re seeing today, which is the culmination of a half-century long, slow, methodical, attack from the anti-God, totalitarian, militant Left – in conjunction with the dangerous mix of political apathy and anti-intellectualism in the American churches – is nothing less than the suicide of our nation.
The mullahs in Iran may lead chants of “Death to America” (a threat that they may actually succeed in delivering upon due to the outrageous foreign policy moves of the current anti-American, anti-Christian Administration), but make no mistake, America in her original, Constitutional, representative republican, and yes – Christian – form has been in the throes of death for quite some time now. For the most part, for the majority of the duration of this national suicide, American Christians have continued about their lives, utterly detached from reality and responsibility, like frogs in a kettle of water heating to a broil, many even voicing contentment in regard to some aspects of the surrounding environs, oblivious on the way to demise.
As historian David Barton points out, “Modern claims that America is not a Christian nation are rarely noticed or refuted today because of the nation’s widespread lack of knowledge about America’s history and foundation.” One of the Secular Left’s main tactics (straight from the Communist Manifesto), is the nationalization of schools and the revision of history taught therein to conform to the “progressive,” anti-American, anti-Christian narrative. Again, due to a number of unbiblical factors, Christians, for the large part, did nothing as secular leftists in the Federal Government basically nationalized public schools, expelling God from the curriculum in the early sixties. As a result, the majority of Americans today, including, of course, most of the American church population, has no idea of how Christianity shaped this nation and how Christianity is essential to our national survival. As Thomas Jefferson famously remarked, “If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, it expects what never was and never will be.”
What Does it Mean to Be a Christian Nation?
Before we can understand the benefits of our Christian roots, we must recover the meaning of the claim that “America is a Christian nation.” There has been a successful attempt by some contemporary Christian and pseudo-Christian theologians (especially those influenced by nineteenth century pietism [division of secular and sacred] and the Emergent movement [marriage of postmodern relativism and “relevant” Christianity]), to ridicule the statement “America is a Christian nation” as a straw-man assertion of a somehow earned place in God’s special revelation, a mockingly-proposed third covenant of sorts after the old and new. Therefore, anyone who points to American Christian foundations is derided as an unscriptural, nationalistic theological lightweight unwittingly proposing God accidentally left God’s covenant with America out of the Bible. According to this line of teaching, the Judeo-Christian roots of America are highly inconsequential, if they existed at all, and the American Christian lack of influence on government is more God’s will than not. In this, there is no practical distinction between the revisionist Secular Left’s view of the role of the American churches in the public square and the standpoint of such Christian theologians.
This is just another in a long line of examples of Christians providing aid and comfort for the enemy-from-within in their mission to kill America. It can be dismantled easily: To say America is a Christian nation is to say America was founded on a Christian ethos and that uniquely Christian ethos was imperative to the establishment and remains fundamental to the maintenance of the miraculous form-and-freedom structure of American society and government. It is a specifically Christian morality, a Christian ideal, which undergirds the liberty so foundational to the remarkable fabric of American life. It is an ideal that, if not maintained and contended for in the public square purposefully and aggressively by Christians, will be completely removed from the national soul of America. John Adams said, “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.” You quite simply cannot have the freedom without the morality and those that suffer the loss of the liberty include all who wish to live free (even those without an appreciation or understanding of the form [morality] essential in undergirding that freedom). William Penn (the founder of Pennsylvania), put it like this: “Those people who are not governed by God will be ruled by tyrants.” In A Christian Manifesto, the late, great Francis A. Schaeffer wrote, “The humanists push for ‘freedom’, but having no Christian consensus to contain it, that ‘freedom’ leads to chaos or to slavery under the state (or under an elite). Humanism, with its lack of any final base for values or law, always leads to chaos. It then naturally leads to some form of authoritarianism to control the chaos.”
Look around, friends. America is engulfed in chaos and with each massive issue pounding the public square in the rapid fire daily news cycle, the proposed solution by the Secular Left, which has seized control of the majority of the levers of power in our nation, is the same: sacrifice more liberty to the Federal Government and Big Brother will make everything alright. If only those radical, Tea Party, Christian, right-wing, conservative bigots could somehow be locked away somewhere, utopia would have arrived already. And as the Secular Left, anti-Christian edifices of government in the massive Administrative State concern themselves with wasting the dwindling resources of overburdened American taxpayers on asinine social engineering programs in their construction of the aptly titled “New Deal” authoritarian nanny state, the main, Constitutional function of the Federal Government – to protect us from physical foreign threats – is severely undermined during a time where American weakness on the world scene has created a void being quickly filled by Islamic Terrorists and Cold-War Style totalitarian state powers.
Make no mistake, the refusal of American Christians to contend for the Christian ethos of our nation, the only ideal that recognizes the Creator-endowed rights to life, liberty, and pursuit of virtue in society, is directly responsible for the ills engrained in our national soil today. These include, first and foremost, the American Abortion Holocaust, which has cost the lives of 60 million precious, preborn lives in horrific fashion (in the same way the sin of slavery cost 750,000 during the Civil War). Those that believe and/or act as if the Bible has no role to play in American civil structure anymore are responsible for Roe v. Wade and the subsequent infanticide with all of its Nazi-like trappings (experiments on harvested baby parts, gender/race based killing, etc.). When God is removed from the equation, then rights are determined and dispensed by the government (this is the death of the American experiment). In the case of abortion, the American ruling masterminds were rubber-stamped by Christian apathy to determine the right to life did not apply to those still in the mother’s womb. As a result, an entire generation has been lost in the American Abortion Holocaust. In this way, the radical Islamists are anachronistic in their slogan: death has already come to America as the result of the removal of our Christian ethos.
It was Ronald Reagan who said, “If we ever forget that we’re one nation under God, we’ll be one nation gone under.” It’s past time for all Americans who claim to belong in faith to the God of the Bible to join the battle to restore our national Christian ethos. While we still have a shred of original foundation left, by the grace and mercy of God, there is still time.
The following is a sermon preached by a pastor who understands the role of the clergy to the culture, titled “Jesus, Lord Over All: Global Warning” (From Romans 1:16:23). Pastor Rob McCoy of Godspeak Cavalry Chapel, Thousand Oaks preaches in the mold of the pastors of the First Great Awakening, which (you won’t learn this now in Common Core curriculum) inspired the American Revolution. If even a tenth of the pulpits in our nation would rise up and speak out in boldness and educate like this revival and restoration would sweep the nation: https://vimeo.com/146855160
