Atheism, Apathy, and Abortion: Who's Responsible for the American Abortion Holocaust?
In his 1981 classic A Christian Manifesto (which should be required reading for at least every American pastor left that is serious about biblical Christianity), the late, great Dr. Francis A. Schaeffer observes that unhealthy doctrines such as 19th century Pietism (the belief that the spiritual and secular are to have nothing to do with each other) had a profound negative impact on American believers, causing the Church to withdraw from the public square at exactly the moment when Secular Humanism (the belief in time/chance naturalism grants man the position the Bible assigns to God alone in regard to ultimate reality and moral standards) was clawing its way to prominence in American academia, government, media, and entertainment. As militant, anti-biblical-values secularists were doing the most by all political means necessary throughout the bulk of the past seventy-five years to establish Secular Humanism as the dominant worldview in America, the vast majority of serious Christians in America were content to leave the dirty business of politics to "the world system" and effect change by "just preaching the Gospel” (the misunderstanding of what the “Gospel” means by those who say this couldn’t be more pronounced). Paradoxically, America, the Gospel lighthouse to the world, the nation which has sent more missionaries to work across the planet than every single nation combined since the inception of the Church in the first century, has now become the home base to one of the greatest, anti-Christian, anti-Gospel atrocities in world history: the ruthless slaughter of sixty-million unborn babies in the American Abortion Holocaust. Step back and look at it this way, from a God's eye view: the nation established in its founding document, the Declaration of Independence, upon God-given unalienable rights, the primary one being the Creator-dispensed "right to life," (because after all, if you're dead, liberty and happiness are of precious little value), now leads the western world in state-sponsored infanticide.
What should be the most shocking to anyone with eyes open is not that people who sincerely believe human life is a random accident of nature and thus has no objective meaning beyond societal expediency are proponents of abortion (after all, amoral dehumanization is a logical result of the naturalistic worldview), but that an estimated eighty-five million evangelical Christians allowed Secular Humanism to replace Christian Theism in America as the de-facto state philosophy and thus ushered in the ghastly era of its ramifications with what can only be described honestly as no real fight at all. In light of this, any sanctimonious talk coming out of the churches now about secularists destroying America at the very least demonstrates a severe lack of understanding about the essence of the problem: the American Church forfeited the public square to the secularists to do whatever they want with a long time ago. Why in the world would theists expect atheists to conduct themselves according to a theistic worldview? If life really is a random time/chance accident, as the non-theists believe and, as Carl Sagan famously pontificated, "the cosmos is all there ever was, all there ever is, and all there ever will be," then there is nothing objectively wrong whatsoever with abortion. Expedient, relative preferences over Creator-granted inalienable rights are exactly what should be expected from the Secular Humanist worldview. Here’s a surprise: ideas have consequences and the consequences of atheistic ideas are godless. It is up to the Christian to be salt and light in the culture and engage in warfare against the ideologies of the dark kingdom (Matt. 5:13-14, 2. Cor. 10:3-5). In America, a nation founded on biblical principles, the Christians receded into safe, false, puny, politically correct little zones of church-house-worship while a relatively small minority of determined, smart, effective, true-believing secular humanists filled the gap, took over, and put their worldview on display. The responsibility for the results, horrifying as they are, lies at the feet of those called by the Bible to refute ideas that set themselves up against the knowledge of God, but have shirked that essential biblical duty. Simply put were not good custodians of that precious gift of American civil society entrusted to us by God and the culture is suffering accordingly.
While realizing the magnitude of our error is important, we must not let it intimidate us into being overwhelmed, depressed, and further impotent. We must put one foot in front of the other in the diligent battle march to fix this and leave the results to God. Just like dealing with any other sin, the first step is repentance: American Christians must acknowledge before God and each other the grave transgression of disengagement from the culture and general apathy toward evil and turn 180 degrees in the other direction. This entails a sincere commitment to intellectual and political engagement to the utmost level. (The example of German pastor Dietrich Bonhoeffer, who was martyred in a concentration camp when it was uncovered he was involved in a near-successful plot to assassinate Hitler, is a fitting prototype for our time and situation). Intellectual and political apathy -- two unfortunate hallmarks of American Christian life (as Dr. J.P. Moreland effectively details in Love God With All Your Mind) - must not be tolerated in our ranks. It was a lack of sharp Christian response in the intellectual arena that allowed Secular Humanism to swiftly conquer the academic disciplines (starting with the mid-1800s to the current day) and an anti-Christian withdrawal from the political arena that created the vacuum of godly influence needed to institute Secular Humanism as the de-facto American State Ideology.
If American Christians are to have any success in undoing the effects of a good portion of a century full of apathy as it relates to engaging the ideas of the secularist worldview in battle and almost complete withdrawal from the civic arena during the same period up to today, it will be the result of a new wave of God’s people in our nation becoming sharp intellectual defenders of theistic faith and unyielding political activists. It is imperative that all American proponents of biblical Christianity challenge our secularist counterparts for the political seats of influence in our nation. We simply must come to grips with the fact that Christian Theism has been unseated in our nation by Secular Humanism as the dominant worldview philosophy of the most influential elites and do something substantial about it. The U.S. Department of Education is not holding curriculum designing meetings for Common Core to figure out how to instill Judeo-Christian values in American schoolchildren. Liberty is on the decline. The right-to-life of the unborn is nullified by high-council of secularists. Massive, centralized, secularized, inefficient, oppressive, unconstitutional government has usurped the American Judeo-Christian values, limited-government, representative republic. Tyranny is on the rise. Its past time for Americans who espouse Judeo Christian values to realize we’re on the losing end of a culture war that has resulted in the expulsion of God from the public square and slaughter of sixty million infants. It’s past time for the people of God in America to train up in Christian apologetics, our nation’s founding documents, and go on an all-in mission of civic engagement to restore what’s left of American foundations and perhaps undo some of the damage caused by the application of the errant worldview of Secular Humanism. At the very least, American Christians must be held responsible for voting biblical values (At the current moment, only approximately twenty-five percent of the eighty-five million self-identifying Evangelicals vote in national elections! We are indeed the silent majority in the face of unspeakable evil.). While this is a task incumbent on all who take up the name of the God of the Bible as His representatives on earth, it is especially binding on those that man the pulpits of the churches across the country. The pastors and youth pastors of our nation must equip themselves for the mission of national restoration or be counted in the same lot as the apathetic, impotent church leaders in Germany who went along with the Holocaust.
Their cries for help drowned out by hymns sung louder/ Our preachers won’t speak on politics, they’re similar cowards/ If you won’t stand for life in the public arena, while these babies are murdered, then your ministry is meaningless.
