Tornadoes happen around the world, but are mostly prevalent in the US. One of the deadliest tornadoes recorded in US history is the Tri-State Tornado.
The Tri-State Tornado happened in Southern Missouri, Illinois, in the year of 1925. The tornado killed 695 people and injured 2,027 more.
The Tri-State Tornado was also the longest recorded tornado, spanning about 219 miles. Tornadoes are scary form of weather, but what causes tornadoes?

What Is A Tornado?
In short, a tornado is a rotating column of violent air that extends from the ground by a thunderstorm. Tornadoes are capable of taking down tall buildings, trees, and vehicles. Nationwide, about 1000 tornadoes are reported.
Tornadoes are also called twisters because of its shape and its massive wind capacity. Tornadoes carry winds that go about 300 miles per hour and damage paths for one mile. The power of a tornado is calculated with a special tool called the EF Scale.
The EF scale measures the damage by calculating the damage and comparing the damage of those objects captured in the tornado to identical objects at certain wind speeds.

What Causes Tornadoes?
Tornadoes are formed from a thunderstorm. Inside the clouds of a thunderstorm, air is warm and humid which it will rise into the clouds.
Along with the air, rain or hail join the humid air where they will join together in the cloud. Once they are in the cloud, both the air, rain, or hail will circulate inside the cloud.
The mixture goes horizonal, but overtime it will go vertical and will eventually drop down from the cloud. When it finally reaches the ground, this is where the tornado is created.
From there, the tornadoes wind will pick up speed. Tornadoes go over 300 miles per hour and are able to destroy anything in its path like buildings, houses, structures, cars, and trees.
Going back to the EF scale, tornadoes are calculated by the amount of damage they do. Meterologists use this scale to give out the exact damage the tornado did in an area. Here is the chart they use:
- EF No: This is the least damage tornadoes do. This is only 3-second MPH gusts.
- 0: Still the least damage, but does a little more. This is about 65-85.
- 1: The damage is between 86-110.
- 2: The damage is between 111-135
- 3: The Damage is between 136-165
- 4: The semi-final to the tornado scale, the damage is 166-200
- 5: The most dangerous level out of all of them, the damage of 5 tornadoes is over 200
Now that you know what causes tornadoes, you might be wondering if there is any way we can monitor tornadoes? Believe or not, there is a way meterologist are looking out for tornadoes. Meterologists are using satellites provided by the NOAA. The purpose of these satellites is to watch clouds.
By watching the clouds, they can monitor the motion of the clouds which will determine if there is going to be a storm. The satellites also gives them a better understanding on what happens inside the clouds.
Not only are there satellities that help watch out for tornadoes, but people’s houses are becoming more resistant to tornadoes.
The Characteristics Of Houses That Are Resistant To Tornadoes
People’s houses are being constructed with a resistant material that prevents tornadoes from destroying the building. This material is called insulated concrete forms. The insulated concrete forms prevent these things:
- Prevents damage: Insulated concrete forms resist 200 MPH winds.
- It prevents debris from destroying houses.
- It also meets certain thermal performance requirements.
What causes tornadoes is scary, however, if more of this material is made and is distributed to places where tornadoes are prevalent, then it is guaranteed that there will be less damage done by tornadoes!
